About The Zebra Effect

My name is Juniper Savage, a 35-year-old mother of two remarkable autistic children. As a dedicated disability advocate and psychological neuroscience student, I am on a mission to create positive change while navigating my own challenges. I am opening this store to help fund our escape from a toxic environment, as we are eager to start anew in Illinois, a place where safety and hope await.
The Zebra Effect began as a disability awareness Facebook page in 2019. I chose the zebra as our symbol because individuals with rare diseases embody strength and resilience. In medicine, there's a phrase: “if you hear hooves, think horses, not zebras.” This captures the struggle that many face when rare conditions go unrecognized.
After a fulfilling decade as a medical assistant and care coordinator, I was diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) in 2018, followed by postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). These challenges made it clear that my previous career path was no longer possible. My husband, too, is facing his own battles with mental health and has been unable to maintain employment, putting us in a difficult position.
Through The Zebra Effect, I am reclaiming my independence and striving for a brighter future for my children and myself. Your support has the power to change our lives, helping us reach a place of safety and stability. Thank you for believing in our journey. I invite you to explore The Zebra Effect, and please reach out if you have any questions or need assistance. Together, we can inspire hope and foster a community of understanding.
